Winds blow change to area prep schedules

| November 22, 2015 5:29 PM

According to their schedules, every area high school girls basketball team should have opened its season by now.

Then again, who could have forseen the damage caused by last Tuesday’s windstorm.

Three of the 10 area teams have still yet to play their season opener.

Coeur d’Alene was scheduled to open at Lakeland last Thursday, but that game was postponed to Jan. 19 because of school closures resulting from the storm. Mother Nature willing, the Vikings will finally open Tuesday at home vs. Sandpoint.

Kootenai had its first two games postponed by the windstorm — last Tuesday at St. Maries, and two days later at Priest River. No makeup dates have been set. Kootenai’s next scheduled game is after the Thanksgiving holiday — Dec. 3 at Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy.

Meanwhile, Kellogg’s girls have played five games — roughly a quarter of the regular season — and are 4-1.

Because of the holidays, this week’s schedule is a light one.

Other girls basketball games slated for Tuesday are St. Maries at Lakeland, and Genesis Prep vs. North Idaho Christian at Holy Family Catholic School in Coeur d’Alene.

North Idaho College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams travel to Pasco, Wash., on Tuesday to face Columbia Basin. The NIC women host the North Idaho All-Stars on Saturday.

The first games for local prep boys basketball teams are scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The first wrestling matches for local teams are slated for two days later.
