White, Sumauang lead Cardinals at Spokane Open
SPOKANE — Freshman Garrett White placed third at 125 pounds, one of six placers on the day for North Idaho College at the Spokane Open wrestling tournament Sunday at the Spokane Convention Center.
Tim Parten was fourth at 165; Jaren Sumauang was fifth, Ryan Middleton sixth at 149; Damian Trujillo fifth at 285 and Bryce Weatherston was sixth at 157.
“We wrestled better today than yesterday,” said NIC coach Pat Whitcomb, whose squad dropped a pair of duals at home on Saturday. “we had some hurties and some sickies that we didn’t wrestle today — something that turkeys and mom’s hugs will cure over Thanksgiving.”
White, from Eureka, Mont., went 4-1, winning twice after losing in the semifinals. Sumauang, a freshman from Sitka, Alaska, went 4-2, beating his teammate Middleton in the match for fifth and sixth places.
“Jaren didn’t have his best day (Saturday), and was able to turn it around today,” Whitcomb said. “Garrett did a real good job beating a lot of tough kids at 125.”
NIC returns to action Dec. 3 vs. Western Wyoming in Las Vegas, a tuneup for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational the next two days.
