PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Simpson shines as Lake City romps in opener

| November 21, 2015 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Keara Simpson had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Lake City Timberwolves to a 52-22 season-opening win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs in a nonleague game on Friday night at Les Rogers Court.

“We were able to pressure them really well,” Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. “We had 14 fouls and most of those were in the first quarter. We came out a little amped up and really ready to play. We were just tired of playing each other for three weeks and ready to face someone else.”

Lauren Rewers scored 10 points and Nina Carlson had six rebounds for Lake City, which travels to West Valley in the Border Clash on Dec. 4.

“Our three posts (Nina, Keara, Lauren) played really well and moved the ball around really well,” Kelly said. “Our posts had a really good effort tonight.”

Sandpoint senior Madi Schoening, who signed with Montana on Wednesday, finished with 13 points for the Bulldogs (0-3).

“We tried to know where she was at all times on the court,” Kelly said. “She killed us up there last year. Our girls took that as a challenge and tried to get the ball out of her hands. When she gets rolling, she can hurt you. Olivia (Maryon) did an excellent job of guarding her tonight.”

LEWISTON — The visiting 3A Tigers led at halftime, but Katie Havens made three free throws in the final 25 seconds to push the 5A Bengals past Timberlake in the nonleague opener for both schools in the Bengal Shootout at Booth Hall.

With the Bengals leading by two, Havens blocked a shot, grabbed the ball and drew a foul and made two free throws. Timberlake junior Keelie Lawler hit a 25-foot jumper with seven seconds left before Havens drew another foul, making 1 of 2 shots.

Allison Kirby and Lawler finished with 12 points each for Timberlake, which faces Lapwai today. Lewiston hosts Moscow today.

BONNERS FERRY — Kadi Bateman scored 15 points for the Badgers (2-0), who turned up the defensive heat early in the fourth quarter to pull out the nonleague win.

“It was tight,” Bonners Ferry coach Chris Chatburn said. “We led the whole way, for the most part. I played my second unit in the third quarter and we turned the pressure on them with our press and that turned the tide. We carried it home from there. We fought through, it was the second night of a back-to-back. We found a way and made the plays. We shot free throws well in the fourth quarter and that made the difference.”

Kelsey Auer scored 14 points to pace the Lumberjacks (0-1), who travel to Lakeland on Tuesday.

Bonners Ferry, which beat the Lake City junior varsity Thursday night, returns to action at Lakeland on Dec. 5.

KELLOGG — Brooke Bircher scored 16 points and Kaili Cates added 11 as the Wildcats (4-0) jumped out to a 27-10 halftime lead and defeated the Trojan junior varsity at Andrews Gymnasium.

“The first half we handled their pressure a lot better than in the second half,” Kellogg coach Eli Bourgard said. “We had guards in foul trouble in the second half, and they chipped away at our lead.”

Mallory Smith led the Post Falls JV with 14 points, and Jenna Gardiner added 10. The Trojans played just six players.

“They outplayed us in the second half,” Bourgard said. “They played full-court man the whole game.”
