Prepare for high winds today

| November 17, 2015 8:00 PM

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for the region this afternoon through midnight.

With sustained winds of 35 to 45 mph predicted, and gusts up to 80 mph, the Kootenai County Office of Emergency Management is urging residents to be prepared.

Damages are expected to include downed trees and power lines, which may lead to power outages.

The high winds are expected after temperatures warm up Tuesday morning, following an anticipated light snowfall that could create 1-2 inches of accumulation.

The winds will be out of the southwest, and those driving through Washington should be prepared for possible dust storms in the Moses Lake and Ritzville areas.

Kootenai County residents are advised to secure loose objects that may become airborne and to expect driving that may be difficult.

“With the winter storm season upon us, everyone should be prepared,” wrote Tamie Eberhard, preparedness coordinator for the Office of Emergency Management.

Citizens are encouraged to have 72-hour preparedness kits at home and in their vehicles. Each kit should include items such as food, water, a first aid kit, flashlights and batteries, a battery-powered radio, warm clothing including hats, gloves, and boots, and blankets. Items for family members with special needs should also be gathered, along with extra money and medications.

Residents are asked to include elderly and disabled family, friends and neighbors in their preparedness plans.
