PREP ROUNDUP: Frosh Hicks sparks Bulldogs in opener

SANDPOINT — Freshman post Grace Hicks made her varsity debut a memorable one, tallying 16 points and four rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 45-32 win over the Spartans in a nonleague girls basketball season opener on Saturday night at Les Rogers Court.

Senior Madi Schoening added 15 points, three assists and three steals for the Bulldogs, who scored 20 second-quarter points to blow the game open.

“It was a typical first game,” Sandpoint coach Duane Ward said. “It wasn’t really pretty, but we hustled and played hard.”

Senior Alyssa Carey scored 14 points to lead Priest River.

Sandpoint travels to Post Falls on Tuesday.

MULLAN — Kayla Miller scored 12 points for the Wildcats in a win over the Jaguars in the championship game of the Silver Valley tournament at the Mullan Pavilion.

“We got down a little bit, but bounced back,” Kellogg coach Eli Bourgard said. “I thought we did a good job with our interior defense and our bench played some big minutes.”

Shaye Schreibeis scored 16 points, while Rachel Schroeder added 12 points, Bella Murekatete scored five points and 13 rebounds and Josie Scribner had eight rebounds for Genesis Prep, which played with only six players.

“I thought the kids played real well,” Genesis Prep coach Debbie Holte said. “We’re only playing with six girls. We stayed with Kellogg, we ran out of gas in the second half and one of our players played sick. I was really proud of how we played.”

On Tuesday in Kellogg, Genesis Prep (1-1) plays the Kellogg JV at 6 p.m., followed by Kellogg (2-0) vs. Coeur d’Alene Charter at 7:30.

“Overall, it was a great team win,” Wallace coach Chris Lund said.

Maryssa Hogamier scored 12 points for Wallace (1-1), which visits Kellogg on Nov. 24.

Yazmin Gallaway and Samantha Stepro scored nine points each for Mullan (0-2), which travels to Lakeside on Nov. 24.

EAGLE — Coeur d’Alene High junior Caitlin Conway finished 50th in 19 minutes, 38.9 seconds as the lone competitor for the school club team in the girls 5-kilometer championship race at the Nike Northwest regional championship on Saturday at Eagle Island State Park.

Annie Hill, running unattached from Glacier High in Missoula, won in 17:31.1.

Coeur d’Alene’s Alex Walde was the top boys finisher in 11th in the boys varsity race, finishing in 16:52.9.

Sandpoint’s Rainey Woodward was ninth in 19:57.3 in the girls varsity race.
