NIC ROUNDUP: Campbell sparks NIC wrestlers
• WRESTLING
COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Chase Campbell, a 2012 graduate of Lakeland High in Rathdrum, shined on a night where wrestlers with local ties were under the spotlight a bunch at Christianson Gym.
Campbell beat Dace Fisher by a 9-6 decision at 184 pounds, clinching a 22-16 win for the North Idaho College wrestling team in its home opener against the Montana State-Northern Lights of the NAIA on Saturday night.
“It was a great crowd and a great scrap between the two teams,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “Both teams were missing some guys at some weights, but I think you could tell how special the night was.”
Campbell, as well as Lakeland product Killian Estes, took the mat for NIC. Blake Ivie (133) of Kellogg, Drake Randall (149) of Lewiston, Garrett DeMers (197) of Coeur d’Alene and Taylor Kornoely (285) — a 2015 NJCAA champion at NIC — competed for Montana State-Northern.
“With us having Chase and Killian in the lineup, and them with Blake, DeMers and Randall, they’re all talented kids from here with state titles, and it shows when you’ve got that kind of crowd,” Whitcomb said. “It was back and forth the entire night.”
DeMers beat Estes 10-2 at 197 and Kornoely won by major decision.
“It was good to see Taylor back in the gym here,” Whitcomb said. “You just hate to see him on the other side. He’s one of those kids you want on your team forever, but looked bigger, stronger and faster than last year and he’ll get a good education where he’s at.”

YUMA, Ariz. — Brayon Blake scored 17 points to lead a balanced Cardinal offense past the Matadors in a nonconference game.
“The guys played really good,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “Arizona Western’s a great team and we came out and had a really balanced effort.”
Lucas Antunez had 16 points and five rebounds, Braian Angola-Rodas 16 points and nine rebounds and Kyle Guice 10 points and 13 rebounds for NIC (4-0), which travels to Pierce College on Friday.
“Kyle was absolutely amazing tonight,” Symons said. “He guarded a transfer from Cincinatti (Jamaree Strickland) and just shut him down and held him to six points and six rebounds. He just played a huge game. We’re really good when we’re sharing the ball and we did a good job of that tonight.”
Arizona Western is 4-1.
