Billie R. Cothern, 91

| November 11, 2015 8:00 PM

Billie Richard Cothern, LTC (USAF, Ret.), of Dalton Gardens, was born Oct. 14, 1924, in Herrick, Ill., to Nellie and Sam Cothern, and went to his maker on Oct. 30, 2015.

Bill was a distinguished fighter pilot, serving more than 23 years in the United States Air Force. He served in the Philippines, flew countless missions during the Korean War, served in England, Libya and Germany, as well as several locations in the U.S. Among his many duties were Flight Leader, Squadron Commander, and Wing Commander. He was a highly decorated officer, having been twice awarded the distinguished flying cross for heroism while participating in an aerial flight. He was also the recipient of eight air medals for meritorious aerial achievement.

Upon retiring to Coeur d’Alene 47 years ago, Bill flew as a spotter for the forestry service, and served as Commander in the Civil Air Patrol, during which time he assisted in sending three local youth to the Air Force Academy. He and his wife, Gloria, designed and built their Dalton Gardens home and became active members of church and community, regularly donating blood, time and money for many community and charitable organizations.

Always thirsty for new knowledge and ideas, Bill returned to school to receive his bachelor’s and master’s of business administration from the University of Idaho.

Following Gloria’s retirement from nursing, Gloria and Bill traveled extensively in three continents, including an 11,000-mile motorcycle trip to the four corners of the U.S.

He is survived by three daughters, Susan Ownby, Marilyn Annable and Patricia Hogan; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1700 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Coeur d’Alene, with Yates Funeral Homes in care of the arrangements.
