STATE HIGH SCHOOL SWIM MEET: Bokowy, Rozier repeat

| November 8, 2015 9:00 PM

BOISE — One team saw its bid for a three-peat come to an end.

Meanwhile, Sandpoint High sophomore Payton Bokowy will get the chance to go for her own during the 2016 state swimming meet.

Coeur d’Alene’s boys and girls teams each finished second in 5A, while Bokowy won a pair of events for the second straight year to help the Bulldog girls to a third-place finish in 4A during the 2015 state meet at the Boise City Aquatics Center.

5A: The Coeur d’Alene boys came up just short in their bid for a three-peat.

Meanwhile, senior Nicole Rozier defended her state title in the 200-yard individual medley, winning in 2 minutes, 4.9 seconds for Coeur d’Alene, which finished second to Boise.

“It was a pretty chill race,” said Rozier, who verbally committed to LSU last month. “It was kind of a hard day and I didn’t sleep too well because of nerves, but it was a good race. It was a lot tougher than we thought it was going to be. The south kids were a lot faster than we expected them to be.”

According to Rozier, Coeur d’Alene’s second-place finish at state marks the best girls finish in school history.

“It’s just exciting to finish higher than any girls team down here,” Rozier said. “I’m really excited because I was part of a team that got a lot of girls in the finals. We were all excited about it and supported each other.”

Rozier tied for the 100 breaststroke championship in 1:06.41 with Andrea Pertula of Idaho Falls. Coeur d’Alene eclipsed the state record of 1:51.21 in the girls 200-yard medley relay with a second-place finish in 1:48.76. Boise won it in 1:47.23.

“That was our goal at the start of the year, to break a record,” Rozier said. “It’s what we wanted to do and was great, even though they were better than us.”

“It was a pretty long day,” she added. “I didn’t expect to set any personal bests with junior nationals in a month, so this was kind of my taper meet. Honestly, I don’t mind that I tied (for first). She deserved to win also and swam a great race.”

Jon Archer was second in the 100 backstroke and Beau Urbaniak was third in the 200 freestyle for the Coeur d’Alene boys.

Post Falls senior Maggie de Tar was second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle.

4A: Nobody has beaten Sandpoint sophomore Payton Bokowy in her first two years as a high school swimmer.

Not the other competitors.

Nor the nerves that were getting to her before the start of the 50-yard freestyle finals.

Bokowy won the 50-yard freestyle in 24 seconds, and also added a championship in the 100 freestyle in 52.23 for the Bulldogs, who finished third.

“I was pretty nervous beforehand,” said Bokowy of the 50 freestyle final. “I just took those nerves and channeled them into my race and won.”

“Payton had very good races today,” Sandpoint coach Mike Brosnahan said. “Her relays were really good also and definitely the strong point for our girls team, but it wasn’t just her. All three of them (including Kate Matlosz, Sierra Speakman and Emily Hieronymus) dropped time and swam really well.”

Before the start of the state meet, Sandpoint — which finished runner-up to Wood River in 2014 — was awarded the state 4A title nearly a year later after eligibility issues with a Wood River swimmer were discovered. After the event was re-scored, Sandpoint had won the championship.

“I was part of the board and in that part of the process, but when the decisions were made, I removed myself from the decision,” Brosnahan said. “It’s rough when it’s a year later, and you’ve had swimmers that aren’t around anymore and have moved on, but it’s cool. We only took six to state last year, and had four that scored, so it became quite a big deal for us.”
