STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEETS: Charter boys just miss 2A title

ATHOL — Two near championships.

One lengthly delay to a timing camera malfunction.

And a lot of rain.

Timberlake’s boys and girls each finished third in 3A at the state cross country championships at Farragut State Park’s Scott Field on Saturday.

In the 2A boys race, Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Michael Graves finished third overall, but the Panthers just missed a state title by one point, losing to Soda Springs, which swept the team titles.

The race was delayed after the 4A girls race after a timing camera malfunction, forcing races to be moved back 45 minutes, with the final race — 3A boys — concluding at 4:30 p.m.

5A: Coeur d’Alene junior Caitlin Conway — the lone returner from last year’s state championship team — finished eighth for the Viking girls, who finished ninth.

“My placing was still good, I think,” Conway said. “It was a much more competitive race than last week (at regionals, at Farragut).”

Conway admitted after the race the conditions were to her strengths.

“You’ve just have to go into it like any other race,” Conway said. “Anything can happen and you’ve just got to push yourself. Personally, I like running in the rain. I’m not sure why, but with cross country, you get different kinds of weather to deal with, so you’ve got to adapt to it.”

Her coach Cathy Compton agreed.

“Anyone running in these kinds of conditions is a great athlete,” Compton said. “It was a mudfest out there. I’m impressed with that young lady (Conway). She ran her heart out and finished in the top 10. We’ll take it.”

Mountain View’s boys and Eagle’s girls won team titles.

Michael Slagowski from Rocky Mountain of Meridian was the boys champion, and Rachel Morrin of Madison of Rexburg was the girls champion.

3A: Timberlake junior Brayden Menti might have stumbled out of the start in the 3A race, but he sure made up for lost time at the finish.

“I slipped right at the starting line and had to work my way back up,” Menti said. “I fell and hit my knee, but bounced right back up. It’s North Idaho, and we get this once a week usually. Most of us are used to running in this.”

Menti caught James Lentham of Teton for ninth.

“I saw him and saw with 160 to go, and I was thinking I could catch this guy,” Menti said. “With about 50 meters to go, just something clicked and knew I could catch him. It’s amazing, last year, I had a bad race and finished 18th. Being in the top 10 is really a blessing.”

Timberlake’s girls finished third, bringing home a trophy for the eighth straight year.

“We could not have been better than third,” Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler said. “I’ve been through the race about 1,000 times and Sugar and Shelley are on a different level than we are. I’m really proud of these boys for having a good day. How they competed, I really couldn’t be prouder.”

Freshman Abigail Peightal was the top female finisher for Timberlake, finishing sixth. She was followed by junior Taylor Hammond in seventh and senior Jamey Weishaar in 14th.

Sugar-Salem won the boys team championship and Shelley won the girls title. Austin Stewart of Shelley repeated as boys champ, and Shelley’s LeAnn Larkin won the girls title.

“I was really motivated to bring back a trophy in my last year,” Weishaar said. “Last year wasn’t a good year for me individually, so I was just excited to finish better this year. I definitely over-did what I thought I was going to do.”

2A: At the start of the season, Graves didn’t even think he’d crack the varsity lineup this season.

Funny how things change.

Graves finished third in boys race in 17:08.5, helping the Panthers to a runner-up finish.

“It’s a huge surprise,” Graves said. “Today, I found out that I had a chance to win it, so I just went for it. Went a little too fast in the first half, and learned my lesson.”

“It was great,” second-year Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Jim McPhilomy said. “He’s trained hard and put in a good, hard season. He drove himself really hard today.”

“Last week, we won districts without even thinking about it,” Graves said. “We hadn’t seen these guys before, but they’re fast and strong. At the beginning of the season, as a team, we didn’t think we had a shot at anything. The way everyone performed the last part of the season, we’re happy to bring home something.”

“These guys have been underated all year,” McPhilomy said. “Last year, they knew they had a chance to win it this year. Unfortunately, they didn’t get a lot of good training during the summer.”

Dillon Emery was sixth, Jackson Ricks 10th for Coeur d’Alene Charter.

Sophie McPhilomy, the coach’s daughter, finished 19th for the Coeur d’Alene Charter girls.

“That’s a big improvement for her,” coach McPhilomy said. “She’s been 21st the last two years, and was determined to break through this year.”
