Hunting deadlines quickly approaching

| May 30, 2015 9:00 PM

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game wants to remind sportsmen that June 5 is the deadline for controlled hunt applications.

The department foresees another great hunting season in Idaho this year.

"White-tailed and mule deer numbers are some of the best we've seen in many years, and elk populations are improving in many parts of the state," states an IFG press release. "This means there are excellent hunting opportunities in Idaho with more controlled hunt tags available this coming fall."

For application information, or to apply online, visit www.fishandgame.idaho.gov.

In other news, Sunday is the entry deadline for the first super hunt drawing. Super hunt tags allow 34 lucky hunters to pursue elk, deer, pronghorn and/or a moose in any open hunt. Increase odds by purchasing multiple entries. Tag buyers may purchase as many entries as they want. If you miss the first drawing, entry deadline for the second super hunt drawing is Aug. 10. Money raised by the drawings support Fish and Game's Access Yes! program.

If a controlled hunt does not go the hunter's way, deer and elk can still be hunted in Idaho. Over-the-counter tags are available for most game units and elk zones during the general season.

Starting Aug. 1, unsold nonresident general season tags can be purchased as a second deer and elk tag by both residents and nonresidents.

Idaho also offers hunting for 10 upland game bird species, including chukar, quail, gray partridge, and ruffed grouse on millions of acres of public land. Season lengths are long and many upland bird seasons are open at the same time as big game seasons.

For those who enjoy fishing, nonresident Idaho hunting licenses include 3-day fishing licenses. Idaho boasts 34 different game fish, from mountain lakes to lowland reservoirs.

Salmon and steelhead are an exception. To fish for these, a three-day salmon/steelhead license is required, or an annual license and appropriate permit.
