Osprey cameras are 'on the air'

COEUR d'ALENE - Cameras installed on each of the three osprey nests at McEuen Park in Coeur d'Alene are now live.

By visiting www.cdaid.org/osprey-web-cameras, the public will be able to get a bird's-eye view of the sea hawks as they nest atop the 70-foot poles.

Ospreys have been nesting on the poles since the mid-1980s, stated the city's Tuesday announcement of the live camera streams.

The birds generally arrive in early April. Viewers can watch geese temporarily resting in the north camera nest.

Parks and Recreation director Steve Anthony said it is believed the birds were attracted to the warmth of the lights on the 70-foot poles, used to illuminate the ballfield before the park reconstruction. Since the ospreys had established themselves on the poles, the nests were not removed as part of the redevelopment project.

"We see it as another park amenity," Anthony said.

A formal dedication of the cameras and recognition of the donors will be held at McEuen Park at a later date.
