SWIMMING
CAST at Inland Empire Short Course Championships: The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team attended the season ending Short Course Championships in Ellensburg, Wash., recently, taking fourth place overall. Three CAST seniors - Suzanne de Tar, Tiffany Portue and Kyle Jones - were recognized for their years of contribution to swimming in the region on a night when graduating seniors were honored.
The 15 and over 400 medley relay team of Suzanne de Tar, Micah Hudlet, Nicole Rozier and Maggie de Tar set a team record of 4:07.92; Cole Curtis set a team record in the 100 breast in 1:01.42 for 13-14 boys, and Maggie de Tar broke the team record in the 400 individual medley in 4:31.80.
Three CAST swimmers took home top honors for the meet and the High Point Trophy in their respective age groups - Sarah Gonzales in the 10 and under girls, Sarah Nicholls in the 13-14 women, and Cole Curtis in the 13-14 men.
Sarah Gonzales scored a team-high 66 points during the meet easily winning her age group for high point, Sarah capped her performance with an AGS time in the 100 IM of 1:18.43. She had a total of five first-place finishes and three second-place finishes. Her first-place finishes included 200 free in 2:33.19, 200 IM in 2:46.85, 50 free in 30.23, 50 breast in 40.10 and 100 breast in 1:25.05. Sarah's second-place finishes included: 100 back in 1:17.96, 100 free in 1:07.16, and 100 IM in 1:16.53.
Sarah Nicholls scored 56 points overall for high point in her age division and placed first in the 100 breast in 1:05.67 and first in the 200 breast in 2:21.39 and also placed first in the 200 IM in 2:10.33 and the 100 fly in 59.85, breaking the minute mark for the first time in the 100 fly. Sarah's other finishes included fourth in the 500 free in 5:27.10, 4th in the 400 IM in 4:48.75, 5th in the 50 free in 25.83, and 3rd in the 100 free in 56.78. At the meet Sarah received national recognition for her top-10 ranking in the nation for her breaststroke.
Cole Curtis scored 64 points in winning his high point award and placed first in four events; the 200 fly in 2:02.99, 100 breast in 1:01.42, 200 breast in 2:15.50, and 100 fly in 55:06, and no lower than second in all his other individual events. Cole's times included a 400 IM, 2nd in 4:26.24, 2nd in 500 free in 4:54.61, 2nd in 200 free in 1:52.51, and 2nd in the 100 free in 50.94. Cole's 1:01.42 in his 100 breast to set the team record at age 14.
Maggie de Tar won the 500 free in 5:07.47, anchoring the winning and record-setting medley relay, and setting a team record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:31.80. Maggie was a strong contender for high point until she had to pull out of the meet Sunday night after collapsing after her 200 backstroke and being unable to swim in her final two events. Maggie finished 2nd in the 200 IM in 2:08.89, 5th in the 100 breast in 1:10.30, 4th in the 100 back in 1:00.50 and 5th in the 200 back in 2:09.78.
Kyle Jones also swam well, finishing first in the 200 IM in 1:56.96, 1st in the 100 back in 54.10, 3rd in the 400 IM in 4:19.81, and 8th in the 200 fly in 2:07.07. Kyle also had to leave the meet early due to the poor air quality and did not swim in finals on Sunday evening.
Jon Archer dropped 15 seconds in his 500 free going a 5:06.79, swam to a third-place finish in his 400 IM with an 11-second drop to 4:29.56, then ran off a series of second-place finishes, finishing 2nd in the 200 IM in 2:02.57, 2nd in the 100 back in 55.99, and 3rd in the 100 breast in 1:05.20. Jon also opted out of swimming on Sunday night and would have almost certainly been second in the high point race behind teammate Cole Curtis.
Gabe Markowski, 15, swimming in the tough 15-to-19 year age group, swam to a first-place finish in the 200 back in 2:05.43, 6th place in the 100 back in 58.71, and 8th in the 100 fly with a 1:00.80.
Micah Sharples, 12, swam to a second-place finish in the 500 free in 5:50.52, 2nd place in the 200 IM in 2:28.57, 4th place in the 100 back in 1:09.96, and 4th place in the 50 fly in 31.00.
Other top-eight finishers included Suzanne de Tar, 18, placed 4th in the 50 free in 25.29 and 7th in the 100 fly in 1:04.73, 7th in the 200 IM in 2:23.35 and 6th in the 500 free in 5:29.31. Isabelle Downing, 10, placed 4th in the 50 fly in 39.10 and 8th in the 100 back in 1:23.68. Alisha Felshaw, 12, placed 7th in the 50 back in 33.14.
Amber Gundlach,13, finished 6th in the 200 breast in 2:41.07 and 8th in the 100 breast in the tough 13-14 women's division. Micah Hudlet, 15, had a number of strong swims in the women's 15-19 division with a 4th-place finish in the 200 IM in 2:16.22, 6th in the 400 IM 4:53.10, and 7th in the 100 breast in 1:10.70, and 6th in the 100 free in 57.76.
Alahna Lien, 10 made her first trip to Champs and swam to many best times, finishing 3rd in the 100 breast in 1:31.03, 5th in the 50 breast in 42.65 and 6th in the 100 IM in 1:23.16. Rose Loftus, 10, finished 6th in the 50 breast in 43.10, and 7th in the 50 free in 32.31.
Caleb Markowski,12, finished 2nd in the 100 fly in a 1:04.71, 6th in the 100 back in 1:08.51, 6th in the 200 IM in 2:28.46, 7th in the 500 free in 5:52.78, and 7th in the 50 free in 27.43.
Haley Pierce, who just turned 13, had a great first swim meet swimming in the very tough 13-14 year old girls division. Hailey finished 3rd in the 100 back with a 1:02.73 and 6th in the 50 free with a 25.88.
Senior Tiffany Portue who will be swimming for Pacific Lutheran University next year continues to get back into fine swimming shape after a period of time off and swam to a 7th place finish in the 100 back in 1:04.09 and 8th in the 200 IM in 2:24.05.
Ian Rector finished as high as fourth in the 100 breast in 1:05.14.
Nicole Rozier swam a limited schedule of events at short course champs, preparing to focus on the upcoming senior sectional meet and swam to a 2nd-place finish in the 200 free in 1:59.06, a 3rd-place finish in the in the 200 fly in 2:16.05 and a 6th-place finish in the 100 back in a 1:02.19.
WRESTLING
Lakeland Wrestling Club: Lakeland sent 12 wrestlers to compete at folkstyle state in Boise on Feb. 14. Lakeland crowned 6 champions in the prestigious event.
Taran Spurgeon won the pre bantam (5-6 year olds) 55-pound division. Wyatt Carey beat Travis Steiner of Nampa 16-1 to win the 45-pound bantam division (7-8 year olds). James Billingsley won the novice 112-pound division (11-12 year olds) with a fall over August Pena of Cougar Wrestling Club. Chandler Axtel won the schoolboy 91-pound division (13-14 year olds) by beating Braxton Sorenson of Bonneville 5-0 in the finals. Axtel didn't give up a point in the tournament. Sam Edelblute pinned Kohl Nielson of Upper Valley Aces in the 84-pound schoolboy division final. Asher Galbarith was also champion at the 175-pound middle school division.
Other Lakeland wrestlers included Kaeghan Spurgeon, who placed 3rd in the bantam 50-pound division with a win over Takeo Sanders of Nampa 2-0. Hutton Hegabloom lost a close match 10-9 to Brett Madsen from Suples Wrestling Club in the novice 80-pound division.
Alex Edelblute placed 2nd in both the schoolboy and middle school division at 77 pounds, losing twice to champion Kase Mauger 6-4 and 6-0. Isaiah Vig placed 3rd in the 77-pound schoolboy division, losing a close one to teammate Alex Edelblute 2-0 in the 2nd-place match. Ryan Quimby placed 3rd in both the schoolboy and middle school 105-pound division. Quimby won 7-1 in the schoolboy semifinal against Luke Mcgreevy from Moscow Wrestling Club but eventually lost 3-0 in the 2nd-place match to Ryan Wilson from Patriot Wrestling Club.
Cage Hendry ended up 3rd in the middle school 128-pound division. Hendry beat Nyckolas Bolinder from SOT Academy 7-0 in the semifinals but lost to Wyatt Shelley of Post Falls 9-0 in the 2nd-place match.
SELECT SOCCER
The Academy Idaho under-12 boys: The Academy played two games in the Seattle PSPL Superleague last weekend.
The Academy lost 4-3 to Cascade FC, despite goals from Canyon Osborne, Brayson Harrington and Aidan Tweety.
The Academy then tied Northwest United 3-3. Academy goals were scored by Andrew Ferreira, Ethan Lawson and Devin Claflin.
Coeur d'Alene Sting U18 girls gold: The Sting leads the 2015 Spring PSPL league with a record of 6-0.
On Feb. 28, the Sting defeated PS Slammers G96 Black 4-0. Meg Lowery had a hat trick with one goal unassisted and additional assists from Meaghan Bare and Nan Kiebert. Nan Kiebert scored once with an assist from Lowery.
On March 1 the Sting defeated the MVP Marauders 96 Navy with Meaghan Bare scoring the winning goal with assist from Aitana Vernon.
Keeper Tiegan Horton had shutouts in both league games.
Last Sunday, the Sting beat CWSA G96 Navy 3-1. Nan Kiebert put in the first goal with an assist from Meaghan Bare. Maggie Vietri scored the second goal unassisted and Meg Lowery scored the final goal unassisted.
