LEVY: Vote yes, and communicate

| March 6, 2015 8:00 PM

As an engaged parent in the Coeur d’Alene School District, I ask our community to vote YES for the March 10 Supplemental Levy. Approval of this levy is critical in maintaining programs our students value and expect.

I am very concerned that some individuals in our community, such as those who fervently oppose Common Core and the ISAT 2.0, plan to deny this levy with the false expectation that derailing crucial funding to our district will somehow promote change. However, reducing funding, and thereby taking away enrichment programs and safety from our students and cleanliness of facilities, does nothing to stimulate change.

I encourage people to seek change through utilizing our district’s exceptional and valuable open-door policy, rather than cutting vital funding to the district. I have, personally, benefited from the willingness of our administration to dialogue with parents. Our principal, Mr. Gray, eagerly participates in a quarterly Coffee with the Principal where parents express concerns and provide input. I have met with Mike Nelson, director of curriculum and assessment, who has provided thoughtful and genuine answers to my questions regarding testing and placement. I have attended PTA Alliance meetings where Superintendent Handelman has invited parents to call or email him with questions or concerns. I have received district invitations for participation in parental focus groups.

Don’t cause our students to suffer. Instead, take advantage of our district’s rare open-door policy! Vote YES for the March 10 Supplemental Levy, and then make an appointment with administration to discuss your concerns.
