Boating safety courses offered throughout region

Sandpoint: The Bonner County Sheriff's Office will be conducting a Boat Idaho Course for members of the boating public wanting to learn basic boating laws and safety. The class will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 20, at the Marine Division Boat House, 4001 N. Boyer Road, Sandpoint. The class is expected to last six to eight hours. It is free to the public and is open to residents of any state.

This course will teach boating safety and legal requirements, including necessary equipment. Basic boating laws and the rules of the road with regard to navigation and boater courtesy will be taught.

Priest River: The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be presenting a course on safer boating at the Priest River Yacht Club on June 13 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The course will cover knowing your boat, emergencies and what to do, operating your boat, legal requirements of boating, courtesies and customs, seamanship, boat parts identification, safety procedures and more.

Certificates are presented upon completion of the course examination. Most insurance companies offer a discount on boat insurance to policy holders who have certification.

The cost of the class is $35 per student and includes text and test materials, snacks and lunch.

Hayden: The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office will host boating safety classes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 20 and July 18 at the Search and Rescue Building, 10865 N. Ramsey Road.
