Maps show Cd'A police downtown hot spots

COEUR d'ALENE - Officers in Coeur d'Alene once again have access to a tool that allows them to accurately track dangerous activities at downtown watering holes.

This week, the Coeur d'Alene Police Department's Crime Analysis Department generated two "hot spot" maps - one for incidents that generated official reports and another for responses that did not - of the downtown area. According to Sgt. Christie Wood, the maps are particularly beneficial to the Community Action Team - a group created by Chief Lee White to focus on going where they're needed most, while interacting as much as possible with business owners and residents.

"They can see what issue is happening, where it is happening, and spend a little more time in that area," Wood said. "That goes for our patrol division as well."

Wood said the downtown maps were used by the department in the past, but fell to the wayside when things got quieter downtown in recent years.

This summer however, the department decided to take a good look at activity during the peak tourist season. Wood said the Crime Analysis Department will generate the maps weekly, and that officers are fortunate to have access to a program that leads to intel-based policing.

"It's an incredible tool that we are very fortunate to have," Wood said.

Downtown Activity / Crime Report: July 8 - 21, 2015

The types of information used to create this report include calls for service, crime reports and field interviews. These records were reviewed and compiled based upon both how the record is related to a specific bar or problem activity in the downtown Coeur d’Alene area. Notably, it is not always possible to obtain information

about where a suspect may have been drinking (e.g. too inebriated) or if a particular crime is directly related to a specific establishment. In fact, the below “hot spot” maps reflect ALL calls or crimes reports – not just those directly related to downtown bars. In that context, the purpose of this report is to provide a general overview of downtown activities in an effort to increase communication between bar establishments, businesses,

residents and local law enforcement with the goal of improving public safety.

Information on BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) as referenced in this report:

State of Idaho BAC DUI Laws: All drivers with a BAC .08 or higher (enhanced if BAC .20 or more) or Under 21

years of age with a BAC of .02 or higher or Commercial Drivers with a BAC of .04 or more.
