WRESTLING

McLeod, Lovett honored: Seth McLeod and Ridge Lovett were named All-Americans at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D., July 18-25.

More than 2,000 wrestlers ages 14-18 from 43 states participated in the annual event held at North Dakota State University.

The Boise State-bound McLeod, the former Post Falls High School standout, placed third in the Junior 182-pound division. Mcleod posted victories over Seth Walker of Iowa 12-0 and Aaron Paddock of New York 9-6 before losing to top-seeded Dylan Wiseman of Virginia 7-5 in the quarterfinals. McLeod then went on a five-match winning streak to make it to the consolation finals where he defeated Ben Darmstadt of Ohio 16-5.

Lovett, a Team Real Life wrestler and incoming Post Falls High School freshman, earned double All-American honors in the Cadet 88-pound division. In freestyle Lovett was the national runner-up, defeating Adrian Galindo of California by fall in 53 seconds, Christopher Trelli of Connecticut 10-0, Lucas Bird of Ohio 13-7 and Kaden Cassidy of Pennsylvania 14-4 in the semifinals. Lovett again faced Mosha Schwartz of Colorado in the finals. The match featured four lead changes and came down to the wire, with Schwartz winning 11-8.

Lovett placed fifth in Greco Roman. Lovett defeated Garet Raynor of Missouri 11-0, Mitchell Slack of Utah 11-0 and Anthony King of Illinois 10-0 before losing to Mosha Schwartz of Colorado 10-7 in the quarterfinals. Lovett went 1-1 in the consolation, finishing fifth.

Other local wrestlers participating in Fargo were William Edelblute, Brian Edelblute, Larry Johnson, Jorden Penock and Jared Walker of Lakeland, and Braydon Huber and Jason Burchell of Post Falls.

Junior tackle camp nears: Coeur d'Alene High football coaches will provide instruction at this year's Coeur d'Alene Junior Tackle Football Camp, scheduled for Aug. 19 and 20 at Coeur d'Alene.

SWIMMING

Rozier, Curtis lead CAST in Long Course Swimming Championships: The Long Course Swimming Championships (50-meter) were held in Spokane as the season-ending swim meet for Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team.

Led by outstanding performances from Cole Curtis in the 15-and-over men's division and Nicole Rozier in the 15-and-over female division, both of these swimmers achieved high point honors for the meet.

The meet hosted the 440 best swimmers from Washington, Idaho and northern Oregon and lasted three full days with swimmers swimming their events in preliminaries in the morning and the top 16 swimmers in each event returning in the evening for the championship finals. All three days of competition lasted 12-14 hours for one of the longest and most grueling championships ever held.

Nicole Rozier, entering her senior year and one of the most-sought-after college recruits in the nation, decided to skip her best events, the 400 IM and the 200 fly and instead focus on events that she does not always swim and still managed to finish ahead of all other competitors in her age group in the high point competition.

Nicole placed first in the 200 backstroke (2:29.16), 2nd in the 50 free (28.97), 2nd in the 100 breast (1:20.37), 2nd in the 200 free (2:19.26), 2nd in the 200 breast (2:54.72), 2nd in the 100 back (1:12.35), 3rd in the 100 fly (1:03.12), and 3rd in the 100 free (1:03.87).

Cole Curtis had best times in every event and recently aged up into the 15-and-over division. Cole placed first in the 400 IM finishing in 5:12.03, 2nd in the 200 fly at 2:26.82, 2nd in the 100 breast (1:11.13), 2nd in the 100 fly (1:01.36), 3rd in the 100 free (58.82), 3rd in the 200 breast (2:38.61), 7th in the 200 free (2:10.04) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:20.88).

Jon Archer (15) continued his dominance in the backstroke, winning the 200 back in 2:21.01 and placing second in the 100 back in 1:04.70. He also placed 4th in the 100 breast (1:15.12), 4th in the 400 IM (5:19.35), 4th in the 100 free (58.89), 5th in the 200 IM (2:25.50), and 5th in the 200 breast (2:45.48).

Team captain Maggie deTar had another outstanding meet, finishing first in the 200 free (2:11.57), 4th in the 200 IM (2:35.38), 5th in the 50 free (29.03), 8th in the 100 breast (1:27.49), 8th in the 200 breast (3:06.10), 8th in the 100 back (1:19.00), 4th in the 200 back (2:39.01), and 5th in the 100 fly at 1:10.84.

Chang He (15), who was also a contender for high point award, was first in the 200 breast (2:33.13), 2nd in the 200 IM (2:18.38), 3rd in the 50 free (25.60), 5th in the 200 free (2:08.74), 4th in the 100 back (1:06.28), 4th in the 100 fly (1:04.76), and 2nd in the 100 free (57.60).

Ella Hosfeld (10), a new swimmer for CAST, finished 6th in the 200 free (3:12.98) and 6th in the 50 free in 36.81 and 7th in the 100 free in 1:27.22.

Sarah Nichols (15) continued her dominance in the breaststroke events and her pursuit of an Olympic Trial time by easily winning both breaststroke events, swimming to a 1:17.10 100 breast and 2:44.32 in the 200 breast. Sarah also continued her improvement in her other strokes, finishing 3rd in the 200 IM (2:32.50), 5th in the 200 back (2:41.20), and 6th in the 100 fly (1:11.93).

Hailey Pierce (13), swimming un-tapered as she prepares for Age Group Zones in Hawaii in two weeks, finished 4th in the 200 IM (2:39.16), 3rd in the 50 free (29.47), 3rd in the 400 free (4:57.63), 5th 200 free (2:21.26), 2nd in the 100 back (1:13.41), 8th in the 200 back (2:56.20), 7th in the 100 fly (1:17.57) and 2nd in the 100 free (1:04.48).

Beau Urbaniak continued his quick improvement in all his events despite multiple bouts of illnesses in the last few months and finished 1st in the 200 free (2:03.37), 7th in the 50 free (26.59), 4th in the 200 fly (2:30.33), 6th in the 100 fly (1:06.63), 5th in the 100 free, 6th in the 100 fly (1:06.63), and 5th in the 100 free (58.90).

Karter Rasmussen (14) was 8th 200 IM (2:41.12), 7th 100 breast (1:25.51), 7th in 200 breast (2:59.94), 8th in the 100 back (1:16.03), and 6th in the 200 back (2:42.62).

Ian Rector (17) was 6th in the 100 breast (1:19.53) and 7th in the 200 breast (2:57.11).

Micah Sharples (13) was first in the 200 fly (2:50.73), 8th in the 400 free (5:17.61), 5th iin the 400 IM (6:04.12) and 3rd in the 100 fly (1:15.01).

Riley Taylor (9) was 8th in the 200 free (3:20.68), and 5th in the 50 fly (43.16). Chelsea Venning (8) was 5th in the 50 free (49.75,) 7th in the 100 free 1:55.99, and 8th in the 50 back (58.84). Tristan Whiting finished 3rd in the 200 back (2:34.31), 4th in the 1,500 free (18:50.88,) 7th in the 100 free 1:01.80 and 8th in the 200 breast (2:58.88).

Ashlyn Craige (8) was 4th in the 100 free (1:49.49), and 7th in the 50 free in 49.25; Brittany Caroon (16) was 7th in the 200 fly (20.87); and Lucia deTar (14) was 3rd in the 400 free relay (4:44.30).

Suzanne deTar (18) placed 3rd in the 400 free (5:01.37). Ethan Downing (13) was 3rd in the 50 free (28.25). Emma Fredekind (10) was 3rd in the 100 breast (1:52.06) and 6th in the 50 breast (51.62).

Hanna Gonzales (17) was 8th in the 50 free at 29.82. Sarah Gonzales (11) was 6th in the 100 breast (1:34.75). Amber Gundlach (14) was 4th in the 200 breast (3:03.79) and 8th in the 100 breast in 1:28.77. Micah Hudlet (15) was 8th 200 IM (2:42.56), 7th in the 100 breast (1:23.50), and 6th in the 200 breast in 3:01.23. Gabe Markowski (15) finished 4th in the 200 back (2:36.26), 7th in the 100 breast (1:22.94) and 8th in the 100 free (1:01.42). Hope McWilliams (12) was 5th in the 50 fly at 35.45, and Alyssa Milchalk (10) was 8th in the 50 back (45.74).

CAST is now preparing for the Coeur d'Alene Crossing, a 2.4-mile open water swim on Aug. 16 across Lake Coeur d'Alene.

COEUR d'ALENE RECREATION

Fall youth soccer: The Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department announces registration for youth fall soccer for all boys and girls grades K-8. Registration will be held Aug. 3-18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the rec department office at 710 Mullan Avenue, in the lower level of Coeur d'Alene City Hall.

The league will start in mid-September and runs through the end of October. Registration fees are $11 for Coeur d'Alene city residents and $22 for non-city residents.

A box will be provided at the rec department for a soccer cleats exchange if anyone is interested.

Mini kickers soccer: In conjunction with Sting Soccer Club, the Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department will offer a camp style soccer activity for 3- and 4-year-olds. Registration begins Aug. 5 at the rec department and will continue until full. There is a limited number of openings.

The camp will consist of four one-hour sessions on Saturday mornings. The Sting Soccer Club will facilitate each Saturday session with parent participation encouraged.

There are no practices. Players must bring a size-3 soccer ball.

The first session begins Sept. 12. Campers must be at least 3 years old on April 1. Cost is $30.

Flag football: Registration for fall flag football for second- and third-graders will take place Aug. 3-28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department, located in the City Hall at 710 Mullan Avenue.

Practices and games will begin after Labor Day. Cost is $11 for city residents and $22 for non-residents.
