COEUR d'ALENE - The Boys and Girls Club of Kootenai County is joining the Salvation Army Kroc Center to bring a USA Triathlon-sanctioned Aquathon Splash and Dash event to Coeur d'Alene Aug. 15.

The USAT Splash and Dash Aquathlon Series is a fast-growing sport for kids between the ages of 5-15. With a focus on participation rather than competition, this USAT Aquathlon event series serves as an introduction to multi-sport events with the goal of promoting a healthy lifestyle by combining running and swimming.

"We appreciate the opportunity to have a USAT Splash and Dash in Coeur d'Alene this year, how exciting for our kids," said Ryan Davis, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Kootenai County.

Davis said it was the idea of race director Ian Martin to partner with the Kroc Center after the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce discontinued the youth triathlon last year.

"It is the perfect opportunity to partner with our friends at USAT and the Kroc Center to launch something fresh for our area youth," Martin said.

Another draw for those joining the fun is that a Splash and Dash doesn't require a bike. With less equipment needed, the cost is less - giving more youths the opportunity to be a part of the event.

"We are excited for the opportunity to engage the youth of our community in the ever-expanding sport of triathlon," Martin said.

The race starts in the pool at the Kroc Center. Following the swim, racers will transition to the Centennial Trail for the run portion of the event. The finish line will be back at the Kroc Center where there will be music, food and prizes for participants to enjoy.
