ANNIVERSARY
Wendell and Kay Wardell
50th Anniversary
Kay and Wendell Wardell celebrated their 50th anniversary onboard the Ruby Princess on July 24, 2015, during a family cruise to Alaska.
They have two children, Jon (Jennifer) and Suzanne (Mike); and four grandchildren, Nathan and Hailey Wardell of Phoenix, Ariz., and Caitlyn and Whitney Simosky of Durham, N.C. All of the children, their spouses and the grandchildren helped Kay and Wendell celebrate on "the day" aboard the cruise ship.
Kay and Wendell met at Washington State University in 1964 where both were students. They were married July 24, 1965, in an evening wedding in Seattle. After four years in the Air Force - including duty in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 - Wendell left the service to become involved in and eventually assume control of the family business in Montana. While Wendell was overseas, Kay finished her degree in education and taught school in Billings, Mont., until the births of Jon and Suzanne.
Over the years they lived in several locations as part of the increased size of the family business, its sale and Wendell's eventual retirement. While in Billings, Wendell was elected a trustee of School District 2. During their 29 years in Billings, Kay enjoyed many volunteer opportunities in the schools and the community.
In Coeur d'Alene she was active in Trinity Lutheran Church and Chapter AV of the P.E.O. sisterhood. Wendell's retirement was interrupted by employment in the public sector first, through the Community Library Network and lastly the Coeur d'Alene School District followed by a third retirement and move to Durham, N.C., to be near family.
Their son, Jon, graduated from Northern Arizona University and is employed as a department head in middle management with Wells Fargo Bank; their daughter, Suzanne, received her Ph.D in microbiology in March 2004. She does breast cancer research at Duke University.
After the anniversary cruise, Kay and Wendell spent a week in Coeur d'Alene visiting friends before moving into their new home in Durham.
