GING: Challenges and opportunities

| July 19, 2015 9:00 PM

Every day, 10,000 Americans turn 65. Aging brings both challenges and opportunities for seniors. A big challenge is giving up independence to live in a long-term care facility. A big opportunity is volunteering to advocate for those seniors experiencing the challenges of living there.

The White House Conference on Aging, held July 13, only occurs every 10 years. One of the topics discussed was the need for more ombudsmen (advocates) to be voices for a growing number of vulnerable seniors living in long-term care and to investigate complaints against facilities.

Volunteering to make a difference in the quality of life of others is an act of caring and compassion. Seniors often have a wealth of experience and wisdom, as well as time, to help others who are experiencing challenges faced in long-term care.

An ombudsman volunteer training is scheduled for seven weeks on Tuesdays, Sept. 15 through Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Get involved and make a difference. For more information call Jan Noyes, (208) 667-3179 ext. 243 or jnoyes@aaani.org.
