Idaho picked to finish last

in Sun Belt football

NEW ORLEANS - Idaho was picked to finish 11th - last - in the 2015 Sun Belt Conference football preseason poll, voted on by the league's 11 head coaches.

Defending conference champion Georgia Southern was picked to finish first.

The Eagles received six of the 11 first-place votes and tallied 110 points, narrowly surpassing the UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns who tallied 108 points and three first-place votes. The Cajuns won their fourth consecutive New Orleans Bowl.

Arkansas State was chosen third with 96 points and one first-place vote and was followed by Appalachian State in fourth with 82 points.

Texas State, with 78 points, was picked to finish fifth to round out the top five. South Alabama was picked to finish sixth and received the final first-place vote; UL Monroe was seventh followed by Troy in eighth. Georgia State was picked ninth, New Mexico State 10th and Idaho 11th.

Bayley tied for third after

opening round at Rosauers

SPOKANE - Former Lakeland High standout Derek Bayley, who just completed his freshman season at Washington State, shot a 6-under-par 65 on Friday and is tied for third, one shot out of the lead, after the opening round of the Rosauers Open Invitational at Indian Canyon Golf Course.

Defending champion Tim Feenstra of Seattle and Ben Nelson of Puyallup each shot 64 for a tie for the lead.

Amateur Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake Country Club shot a 66 and is tied for fifth. Taylor Porter (Avondale), Trevor Fox (Black Rock) and Austin Westphal (Avondale) each shot 68 and are tied for 22nd.

Billy Bomar (Prairie Falls) shot 69; Russell Grove (Twin Lakes Village) shot 70; Jason Lehtola (The Highlands) and Brent Walsh (Coeur d'Alene Golf Club) shot 71; amateur Kyler Gable (Avondale) shot 72; and Nolan Pahmahmie (Circling Raven) shot 73.

The 54-hole tournament continues today and concludes Sunday.

Mountain View's Slocum named

to USA Basketball U19 team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Destiny Slocum, a 5-foot-7 guard at Mountain View High in Meridian and the Idaho Player of the Year, was named to the 2015 USA Basketball U19 World Championship team.

Slocum replaces University of Connecticut signee Katie Lou Samuelson from Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif., who returned home during the USA's training camp due to a family illness and will not be able to participate in the tournament.

The USA opens play at the FIBA U19 World Championship today vs. Spain in Chekhov, Russia.
