Shock, still in position to
make playoffs, host Arizona
SPOKANE - Losers of two straight and five of their last six, the Spokane Shock (4-10) play host to the Arizona Rattlers (12-2) in Arena Football League play tonight at 7 (SWX, ESPN 700) at the Spokane Arena.
Arizona trails San Jose (14-1) by 1 1/2 games for the top seed in the playoffs.
The Shock are fighting for the fourth and final seed in the National Conference playoff race, but after a loss last week are tied with Portland at 4-10. Due to Spokane's 15-point victory over the Thunder on June 21, the Shock maintain an 11-point advantage in head-to-head competition. The final regular season matchup between the Pacific Division teams will take place on July 25 in Spokane.
Portland finishes out the season with games against San Jose (Saturday), Spokane, Las Vegas and Arizona. The Shock finish their regular season schedule against Arizona (tonight), Portland, Cleveland and Las Vegas.
Spokane lost 60-43 at Arizona in the season opener, then lost 59-47 to the Rattlers at home May 30.
The Rattlers are ranked third in the AFL with 56.7 points per game this season. They have limited their opponents to 44.6 points per game (ranked second).
Spokane is ranked ninth with 47.1 points per game. The defense, ranked last in the AFL, has given up 56.6 points per game.
Regional softball tourney starts today at Ramsey
COEUR d'ALENE - Ramsey Park will be the site of another ASA youth fastpitch tournament this weekend, this time the Region 15 14-and-under class "B" regionals starting today and running through Sunday.
The North Idaho Xtreme, the lone local team in the 10-team field, opens today vs. the Mining City Magic at 3:30.
Other teams entered include the Spokane Crash 2001, Montana Eclipse, Lower Columbia Devastation, Spokane Diamonds Butler, Capital City Crush, The Bat Company, Idaho Diamond Bandits and the Voodoo Dollz.
Jacobson added to women's
basketball staff at Idaho
MOSCOW - Idaho women's basketball coach Jon Newlee announced the hiring of Jeri Jacobson to fill out the 2015-16 coaching staff on Thursday.
Jacobson spent the last year as the director of basketball operations at North Dakota.
Prior to UND, Jacobson spent two seasons at Upper Iowa as a graduate assistant.
Jacobson played two seasons at Central Wyoming College and two seasons at Upper Iowa.
Water sports event
nears in Priest River
PRIEST RIVER - A slalom ski, wakesurf, kneeboard and wakeboard amateur competition is scheduled for Aug. 1-2 at Willow Bay.
Registration and practice is scheduled for July 31, followed by two days of competition.
The event is the third stop on the INT Pacific Northwest tour, which also has a scheduled stop at Long Lake near Spokane.
According to an information sheet, "The environment is non-intimidating and family friendly. INT events are competitions to improve your ability level, learn new tricks and meet new friends."
