What areasare addressed by a facelift?
Everyone is aging on a daily basis and as this occurs over time, we begin to notice wrinkling and laxity in the cheeks, softening and volume loss in facial tissue, and loosening of the muscles and skin of the neck. Our faces, which are constantly exposed to free radicals, are where we tend to notice the effects of gravity and aging the most. A facelift is a procedure that addresses these concerns.
Facelifts target two subunits of the face: the neck and the cheeks. Many people often complain of their "turkey neck," which is a natural loosening of the platysma muscle during the aging process. As we age, this muscle stretches out and becomes lax. A facelift corrects this issue by using a small incision under the chin to tighten the platysma muscle, restoring the contour of a tighter, more youthful neck.
The cheeks are addressed using incisions hidden in the hairline, behind the ear, and at the helical and post tragal portions in front of the ear. The underlying superficial muscular structure is tightened and the soft tissue is elevated back to its more youthful position in the midface. Excess skin is removed during the procedure and the results produce a soft and natural appearance. A correctly performed procedure should make someone look young for their age, not overly taut as Hollywood tends to portray.
A facelift cannot stop the process of aging, nor does it change the volume of the soft tissue and quality of the skin, therefore we recommend a multi-faceted approach. Adding cosmetic injectables as well as a quality skin care regimen can help to increase the longevity of your results.
