Garland Lee Smith, 50
On July 4, 2015, Garland Lee Smith died unexpectedly from a medical condition.
Born Oct. 1, 1964, to Angie and Jesse Smith, he was raised in the Elk, Wash., area where he went to high school.
From a young age, Garland followed in his father's footsteps and learned the trade of glass work, becoming a successful Glazer. He continued to master this line of work all his life. He also gave his time to volunteering for the Spokane County Fire District 4 for a few years. He admired his brothers he worked with, and enjoyed the rewarding feeling of helping others in need. Throughout his life, Garland would lend a hand to those who needed it. No task was too much to ask. He made so many lifelong friends, more than most of us could imagine. Many of those were made working his trade with the folks at River City Glass.
His laugh was infectious. He would laugh with his heart, and it always brought a smile to those around him. Garland had an ability to live every day to the fullest and it would brighten all of our spirits.
His love and respect for the outdoors took him on many fishing trips with his family and friends. He loved riding his Harley with his "Baby Doll" and made even more lasting friendships while riding.
One of Garland's favorite pastimes included woodworking. He created many beautiful things from reclaimed lumber and transformed them into items that his family and friends will forever love and cherish. Garland hated cold weather, but endured it by watching Gonzaga Basketball and calling his mother-in-law, Mary Ann, so they could discuss the play by play.
He was so happy to finally return to North Idaho where he was closer to family and the things he loved to do.
Garland was preceded in death by his father, Jesse; and his brother, Jesse Jr. He is survived and celebrated by his wife, Sandy Roe Smith (his "Baby Doll"); his mother, Angie Smith of Boise; brother Clay of London, England, sister Loretta of Elk, Wash., and sister Roxie of Boise. Garland also leaves behind his children: Rachel and her husband Nick, Charlene, Brian, Nellie and Jeremy. He adored his six grandchildren with all his heart. He is also remembered by an entire clan of cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles that will miss him greatly.
There is an emptiness that we will never fill with his loss, but our lives are so much better because of knowing this incredibly selfless man. He was a loving husband, great father and grandfather and the most loyal friend. We love him and miss him greatly. Garland was even giving in death by being an organ donor. He will live on not only in spirit, but with his contributions to life for others.
At Garland's request, there will be no services; regardless, clothing is optional. If one is inclined, a donation can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in his honor. He wanted to serve but because of medical conditions was unable. It never kept him from believing in our men and women who did.
We love you Garland! "Git 'er Done!"
