Look, up in the sky...
COEUR d'ALENE - Fireworks weren't the only things drawing eyes above Lake Coeur d'Alene on the Fourth of July.
Multiple drones were sighted hovering over the lake before and during the fireworks show, most believed to have been piloted by local hobbyists. But one of the drones belongs to Andy Olson and Jake Walbrun, a pair of Spokane-based entrepreneurs who are in the beginning stages of launching an aerial cinematography company called Innovative Aerial Solutions.
"We have been looking for any opportunities to expand our portfolio - anything that provides a unique angle that catches someone's eye," Olson told The Press. "In this case, it was speeding along the lake with fireworks reflecting on the water and all the boats."
Olson said both he and Walburn play a critical role in operating their DJI Inspire 1 drone. The pilot for the flight keeps track of the drone, while the other operator uses a second controller to keep the camera on track, ensuring there is no jerky camera movement as the drone turns.
"Every time we moved to a new position on the lake, we were watching the explosions light up the lake and boats all around," Olson said of their flight on the Fourth. "We got really excited to review the video and see how it turned out."
Innovative Aerial Solutions made the high-definition footage they captured on Lake Coeur d'Alene available for free on YouTube. Those interested in watching can find the footage at http://bit.ly/1HOAzbr.
Diane Higdem, events coordinator for the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce, told The Press Tuesday that she noticed drones hovering in the sky while she was overseeing the Fourth of July festivities.
Higdem added that she was not contacted by anyone running the fireworks, and that she would have been notified if the drones were a safety concern during the show.
