LETTERS: Not everybody agrees

| July 8, 2015 9:00 PM

I would like to respond to four letters in The Press on July 1 from Keith, George, Ron and Bob.

Keith: Regarding the wealthy white framers who wrote the Constitution following British law and the Bill of Rights, nothing in the Constitution would have applied to you without amendments. Men had to own required amounts of land to vote; white women could not vote. Women waited from 1776 to the 1920s — 144 years — to get the vote by the federal government. Not the states. Blacks had to wait 188 years in the South to have the right to vote. We are not talking about feeling, we are talking about liberty and justice for all. As far as witch hunts, the Christians did that for centuries.

George: Would you give up your Medicare or Social Security? They do not come from the state but the federal government laws. More than 10 million of our citizens can now afford health insurance. Without Obamacare many people would die way too early without health care. You claim to be Christian; what happened to “we are our brother’s keeper?” I know way too many people who try to push their religious views stating God’s will and scripture.

You could not marry a person you loved if they were another race in all states until 1963. It is against the law to discriminate against anyone and at your age you should know the stories.

Business owners wouldn’t serve people at restaurants, gas stations, hotels and movie theaters. School children had to ride in the back of the bus.

Confederate flag, yes it’s about history and the soldiers who believed what it stood for, as did the Nazi soldiers and their flag. These particular flags should only be in museums. The American flag and the German flag prevail because they represent decency. I have not heard of anyone wanting to remove the Pledge of Allegiance from public schools that is insane.

To Ron and Bob: You speak of morality and same-sex marriage. Think of Christians, protestants and Catholics during the Reformation, the Spanish Inquisition where they boiled and burned people alive, pulled people apart on the rack, chopped off their heads all because they believed differently.

The Five Crusades from Rome when Christians invaded the Middle East, killed all males over 14 and raped all females 14 and over and desecrated their mosques — all because it was God’s will.

Christians have been the predators of others for centuries. Marriage is between two people who love and want to make a commitment to love and respect each other.
