Latest Cape Horn fire update: 35 percent containment

The Northern Rockies Incident Management Team issued this latest Cape Horn fire fact sheet at 10 p.m.: 

Location: East end of Bayview, Idaho on Cape Horn mountain

Agency Jurisdiction: Idaho Department of Lands

Cooperating Agencies: Kootenai and Bonner County Sheriff’s Departments, U.S. Forest Service Idaho Panhandle National Forests, Timberlake and Northern Lakes Fire Protection Districts

Incident Command: Western Montana Type Interagency Incident Management Team (IMT2)

CURRENT SIZE: 1,380 acres

CONTAINMENT: 35 percent

CAUSE: Under investigation

TODAY’S ACTIVITY: Crews built additional hand and dozer line, and burnt out areas along line.

Multiple aircraft supported ground operations by dropping water and retardant to strengthen fire lines and cool hotspots.

At 8 p.m., fire officials provided information and answered questions during a community meeting held at the Bayview Community Center. Nearly 300 people attended. Another public meeting is scheduled for tomorrow 8 p.m. at the community center.

RESOURCES ON THE FIRE: nine 20 person crews, eight engines, two air tankers, four helicopters, three fire boats, two sheriff boats, three dozers, two water tenders, Total personnel: 295

SPECIAL CONCERNS: Steep, rugged terrain, and old mine shafts in the fire area are safety concerns

Structures Threatened: 287

CLOSURES: Due to fire activity and to provide for public safety, the following roads are closed:

• Highway 54: Closed at Farragut St. Park Visitor Center

• Perimeter Road: Closed at Sallee Creek Road
