| January 23, 2015 8:00 PM

* BOYS BASKETBALL

RATHDRUM - Skyler Speakman hit a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining as the Sandpoint Bulldogs held off the Lakeland Hawks 45-43 in a 4A Inland Empire League game on Thursday at Hawk Court.

Speakman's free throws put Sandpoint up 45-41. Tyrel Derrick of Lakeland was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with one second left. He made the first two free throws before intentionally missing the third, but the Hawks were unable to get a shot up before the buzzer.

Sandpoint (6-9, 2-0 4A IEL) led 21-17 at the half after holding the Hawks to a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter.

"We got a little out of rhythm in the second quarter," Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. "Both teams played really good defense, but we were able to get our rhythm back until the fourth quarter."

Tyrel Derrick had 14 points and five assists and Daniel McDevitt had seven rebounds for Lakeland (10-4, 1-1), which is ranked second in this week's state media 4A boys basketball poll.

"Sandpoint played good defense and played tough," Ryan said. "They got up in us a little bit and that had something to do with us being out of rhythm. Down the stretch, they executed their stuff and made their free throws when they needed to."

Davin Norris scored 11 points for Sandpoint, which hosts Post Falls on Feb. 5.

Lakeland travels to Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday.
