ARTICLE: The way it should be done

| January 18, 2015 8:00 PM

I just read Brian Walker’s story from Jan. 13 on the front page of The Press, “Arrest of boy, 9, a mistake.” I wanted to compliment Mr. Walker on the writing of this article.

I have never read an article that began sounding like a hit to the police for doing something that on the face seemed excessive and silly. By the time we finished reading your well researched article, I had a very different reaction. Your article was very fair to KC Prosecutor Barry McHugh and to Post Falls Police Chief Scot Haug. I particularly enjoyed reading about the various options that McHugh had and his analysis of what was done and what should have been done, both for the welfare of the child, fairness to his family and fairness to the police.

Mistakes can be made, but when an event is reviewed and an apology issued where appropriate, respect for the police is elevated. Brian did an excellent job of that. Also, his article covering Haug’s action and his analysis of what could be done in the next situation like this, was excellent. Not only did the actions in this case become much clearer, but the police came off as rational, thoughtful and kind human beings. You can’t ask for more than that, and yet at the same time, the child’s welfare and his family’s problems were handled with great sensitivity and justice.

Excellent, article, Mr. Walker. I look forward to reading many more articles from you. You are a rare writer with a gift for clarity and presenting all sides of an issue.
