Editor's note: This is the first in a series of monthly newsletters the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Recreation Safety Section will be writing. It will cover safety, current events and other topics related to the backcountry and marine areas of Kootenai County.

COEUR d'ALENE - The snowmobiling season is in full swing and groomers have been out several times a week maintaining the hundreds of miles of trails.

The snow is a little thin so it is not recommended snowmobilers leave the groomed route as people might find a stump or some other hazard. That said, the trails are in great shape.

For full-sized vehicle enthusiasts and other wheeled-vehicle users, please be aware that travel is not allowed once a route has been designated as a snowmobile trail.

However, an ordinance change this year now allows ATVs or side-by-side utility vehicles access to the trail system as long as they are fitted with tracks, are less than 74 inches wide and weigh less than 2,000 pounds.

These vehicles must also be registered as a snowmobile and have a groomer sticker attached.

The entrances to these trails will be marked with a barricade and signs.

Some of these entrances include: Fernan Saddle, Hayden Creek, Bunco Trailhead, Fourth of July Pass and Bumblebee.

Some simple safety tips to follow:

* Never travel alone.

* Always tell someone where you are going.

* Dress appropriately for the weather.

* Pack survival gear in case you have to spend an unexpected night in the backcountry.

Recently there have been some folks who haven't practiced these rules and have come close to being seriously injured.

Those with any marine or backcountry related questions can contact Jeff Burns at (208) 215-0221, or at jburns@kcgov.us.

Also, on Feb. 21, there is a free Idaho boating safety class being offered. For information or to register please contact Deputy Bob Bjelland at (208) 446-2250 or rbjelland@kcgov.us.
