NJCAA WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: NIC in fifth after 1st day
DES MOINES, Iowa - They've got a chance.
But for the North Idaho College wrestling team to win its 15th NJCAA championship, it's going to take a strong showing in the consolation round this morning.
North Idaho finished Friday's opening day of the NJCAA tournament at the Jacobson Exhibition Center fifth with 62.5 points. Region 18 rival Clackamas leads with 94.
Dajour Reece (165 pounds) and Taylor Kornoely (285) advanced to the semifinals for NIC.
"Dajour blew his first guy out of the water, then had some close matches in his second and third match," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "Taylor scored a big takedown in the quarters to solidify the win. They both put themselves where they need to be."
Michael Nguyen (125), Bryce Weatherston (141), Tyler McLean (157), Jordan Cooks (174) and Johnathen Dennis (197) remain in the consolation bracket, winning in the fourth round to assure themselves of All-American status for finishing in the top eight.
"It goes without saying that today's a big day," Whitcomb said. "Bryce gets beat, but wins a consolation match by a point, Tyler wins by a few points and Johnathen wins in matches they came up short in last year. If they can wrestle well, we're in good shape. If they all lose, we're not going to do well."
Clackamas has nine semifinalists.
"They're having a good tournament," said Whitcomb of Clackamas. "They're performing really well."
