ROADS: Malek has right idea

| February 25, 2015 8:00 PM

The Idaho Transportation Coalition is a group of Idaho businesses and individuals who have come together to support increased funding to repair and maintain Idaho’s aging and sometimes-crumbling road and bridge infrastructure. Rep. Luke Malek is absolutely correct to make this a priority. It is cheaper to maintain and repair existing structures than it is to build new ones. Every county in Idaho is facing deteriorating roads and bridges.

We cannot simply ignore this problem. Idaho’s roads have deteriorated in several instances to where they are currently limiting commerce. The problem is particularly acute in North Idaho’s mostly rural counties. These roads need improvements to support Idaho economic activities, and improvements cost money. Revenue from various sources — fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, rental car fees, various permit fees — must all be considered to find the right solution that is most palatable and fair for all Idahoans.

We must stand in support of Rep. Malek and our Legislature as they work to find ways to fairly and sustainably fund ITD’s road maintenance and repair programs. If we do not, roads will continue to fall into disrepair and business and commerce will become increasingly impaired. No one wants to see that happen. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Malek’s straight talk about Idaho’s roads is commendable.
