This is a very common problem as we advance through the decades. Up until now, there has not been a natural and practical solution for the lines around the mouth.

Many of my patients complain of lines around their mouth, even though they've never smoked. But, you have to realize that our mouths are rarely relaxed. Much of the challenge in correcting perioral lines comes from the constant activity from talking, drinking, and eating. Not to mention that many of us hold stress in our mouths when thinking or focusing on something important. All these factors contribute to lines around the mouth, so we rely on an arsenal of products and services to combat this problem, depending on the severity.

Many hyaluronic acids (HAs) are manufactured with particles too large to be a practical solution for such dynamic lines, thin skin, and a desire to keep patients looking natural. Although large particle HAs are great for replacing volume in the mid and lower face, they are not always the best for the deep but stubborn lines around the mouth.

While there are ways to combat lines, I've always taken a conservative approach by simply restructuring the vermillion border. Large particle HA products can often look unnatural when injected directly into the perioral lines. Now there is a fine particle product that can address this problem: Restylane SILK.
