5A Region 1 boys basketball title to be decided tonight

POST FALLS - Top-seeded Post Falls High (21-1), ranked No. 1 in the state in 5A, plays host to second-seeded Lake City (12-10) tonight at 7 at The Arena in the 5A Region 1 boys basketball tournament.

The winner advances to state March 5-7 at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

Post Falls won both meetings during 5A Inland Empire League play. The Trojans rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to beat Lake City 46-40 at home on Jan. 23. On Feb. 3, Post Falls rolled to a 63-32 victory at Lake City.

"I don't think our previous two games have much bearing on this one," Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. "Both teams have changed. We've evolved, and I also think Lake City has evolved and they're playing better."

Post Falls has won 12 straight games.

After that lopsided loss to Post Falls, Lake City has won four of its last five games.

"I thought we played them as good as people could play them at their place," Lake City coach Jim Winger said. "And here was kind of our learning lesson. We have, especially in league play, have played better, and these kids, watching them tonight (in a 62-42 victory over Coeur d'Alene last Friday), I think they'll come out and play hard."

St. Maries boys play tonight in 2A District 1-2 title game

The top-seeded St. Maries Lumberjacks (15-4) play the No. 3 seed Orofino Maniacs (14-7) tonight at 6 at Deary in the championship game of the 2A District 1-2 boys basketball tournament.

The winner advances to state March 5-7 at Capital High in Boise.

Orofino won 64-62 at No. 2 seed Grangeville in the first round on Saturday. St. Maries had a first-round bye.
