Accused double murderer's roommate says he saw victim's body
BOISE (AP) - A former roommate of accused double murderer Michael Dauber testified that he saw a victim's body in 2000, but he was told by Dauber to keep quiet.
Tom Tiffany recalled seeing Joshua Reddington's body at an Idaho City cabin with a hole in the forehead, the Idaho Statesman reported.
Tiffany said Dauber told him that Reddington was a bad person.
"He said if I kept my mouth shut, we both had tickets to heaven," said Tiffany, a 36-year-old restaurant worker and handyman.
After a seven-hour hearing Friday, Ada County Magistrate Judge John Hawley Jr. found enough evidence that the 46-year-old Dauber killed Reddington to advance the first-degree murder case to district court. The hearing was at the Ada County Courthouse because of security concerns at the Boise County Courthouse.
Dauber, the son of a Chicago mobster killed in 1980, is also charged in the 2007 death of Steven Kalogerakos. Boise County prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Reddington's mother testified that she last heard from her son during the Memorial Day weekend of 2000, a time when Dauber and his friend Reddington were working in helicopter logging.
Tiffany, who did chores at the cabin in exchange for free rent, did not share his account until approached by investigators last September. He was in jail on a drunken driving charge when he agreed to cooperate with authorities if granted immunity.
Tiffany testified that he refused to help Dauber move Reddington's body into the cabin's crawl space the night of the alleged murder. When asked by a defense attorney why he didn't immediately flee, he said he was panicked and he didn't have his shoes.
Tiffany recalled hearing the sound of a saw and bones cracking that night. DNA testing on a single bone fragment found in the crawl space last October was a close match to Reddington's biological mother, according to experts called by the prosecution. A single bullet hole was found in the floor of the cabin's loft, Idaho State Police detective Joseph Lake said.
Dauber also is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Steven Kalogerakos, who was 42 at the time he disappeared in 2007. Kalogerakos' body was found in the desert an hour or so from Idaho City, said his sister, Maria Kalogerakos, who traveled from Chicago to attend Friday's hearing on the Reddington case.
