STATE 1A DIVISION II GIRLS TOURNAMENT: Lakeside falls in first state tourney game since '04
NAMPA - Lakeside returned to the state tournament for the first time since 2004, but 24 turnovers and a 19-7 second-quarter run allowed Dietrich to down the Knights 64-44 in the first round of the state 1A Division II girls basketball tournament Thursday at Nampa High.
Lakeside (10-11) was within earshot at 16-12 after the first quarter, but the big run gave the Blue Devils (21-3) a sizable 35-19 lead at halftime.
"I thought we came out a little bit nervous," Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. "Dietrich had a nine-point lead on us before we knew it. We got things under control after the first quarter. We had too many turnovers, 24 of them and that's what cost us and they're a really good team. You can't have that many turnovers against a team like that. I was happy with the girls' effort. It was tough we drew Dietrich right off the bat, but I'm proud of the girls."
Guard Jordyn Nomee paced Lakeside's attack with 14 points, followed by post Cailyn Dohrman with 13 points and six rebounds. Post Lillian Rhea had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Lakeside point guard Talia Hendrickx finished with four assists.
But two Dietrich players nearly outscored the entire Lakeside team. Center Katee Hubert had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and guard Jacey Shaw added 18 points.
"Hubert was tough inside and scored a lot of baskets," Dohrman said. "We tried to cover the inside and that would leave shots on the outside. My point guard, Talia Hendrickx, was in foul trouble and losing her ball handling hurt us a little bit."
Lakeside plays against Council at 5:15 PST tonight at Nampa High in a consolation round game.
