Wayne C. Haas, 84

| February 17, 2015 8:00 PM

Wayne C. Haas, 84, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, was called home to glory on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015.

Wayne was born to Clarence and Emily Haas on June 26, 1930, in Omaha, Neb. He lived there until the age of three when his family relocated to Los Angeles, Calif. where his father worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He graduated from Fremont High School in Los Angeles in 1948 and later that same year enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served from 1948 to 1952.

On March 10, 1951, Wayne married his high school sweetheart, Alberta Lee (Pepper) Martin. They were married for 57 years until Pepper's death in 2008. On October 10, 2010 (10/10/10) he married longtime family friend, Cathie Gundle, of Reno, Nev. Together they enjoyed many trips to visit relatives on both sides of their respective families from Reno to the Oregon coast to California to Toronto, Canada.

Wayne was a police officer for the city of Los Angeles from 1957 to 1977 serving as an Accident Investigator, Freeway and Street Patrolman, and Latent Prints and Detective Investigator. In 1966 he was awarded the Police Department's "Medal of Valor" for heroism. Upon his retirement, he and Pepper moved to Coeur d'Alene where together they built a house on seven acres in Cougar Gulch.

Wayne loved to play golf, spend time with his family, and serve his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a faithful member of Immanuel First Lutheran Church in West Covina, Calif. and Christ the King Lutheran in Coeur d'Alene. Wayne, as father, grandfather and great-grandfather, understood the importance of living out his faith and passing that faith on to the next generation - and if you know anything about the Haas family, you know he succeeded.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Emily; his first wife Pepper; and his brother Richard. He is survived by his wife, Cathie; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Nancy Haas of Post Falls, son and daughter-in-law Timothy and Sally Haas of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., daughter and son-in-law Kimberly and Scott Sylwester of Hayden, Idaho; stepsons Scott Gundle (Lisa) of Toronto, Canada, and Brett Gundle of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren Nicholas (Jen), Christopher (Katrina), Brandon, Emily, Matthew and Kyle Haas, Samantha and Timothy Sylwester, and Troy Gundle; great-grandchildren Noah, Aiden, Kale, Miles and Nora-Skylynn.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. today, Feb. 17, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1700 Pennsylvania Ave., Coeur d'Alene, with Rev. William Hemenway officiating. A reception will follow in Founders Hall at the church.

Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene, is in care of the arrangements. You may visit Wayne's memorial and sign his online guestbook at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
