PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland drives past Sandpoint for 4A IEL title

| February 14, 2015 8:00 PM

* BOYS BASKETBALL

SANDPOINT - It was a tough way to start the game for Lakeland, as senior starter Jake Ram injured his ankle just 15 seconds into a 4A Inland Empire League showdown Friday night at Les Rogers Court.

But the Hawks (15-5, 3-1 4A IEL) didn't bat an eye without one of their top players, as Tyrel Derrick tallied 16 points and five assists, Jay Plunkett added 14 points and Slader Ray eight points, six rebounds and two steals in a 48-30 win over the Bulldogs. The win earned the Hawks the No. 1 seed to the Region 1 tournament Feb. 23 and 25 at North Idaho College.

The Hawks used a tough man-to-man defense to hold the cold-shooting Bulldogs (7-12, 2-2) to 10 first-half points. Lakeland coach Dave Stockwell praised how his team overcame an injury to one of its most important players.

"That's the definition of team, when one of your brothers needs help, you do what you have to. Kenny (Cooper) and Preston (Roth) came in and kind of filled that spot," said Stockwell, whose team lost by two points to the Bulldogs at home in the first meeting of the season. "Our defensive intensity was the difference. It was a huge win; I'm proud of my guys for their defensive effort."

Davan Norris hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter as part of his team-high 11 points, and Skyler Speakman added nine for the Bulldogs, who will now face Moscow in the first game of the regional tourney on Feb. 23.

"It was one of those nights where we were ice cold. We really got out-rebounded, and that was disappointing," Sandpoint coach Kent Leiss said. "Between the rebounding and struggling to score points, that was it."

Sandpoint hosts Coeur d'Alene tonight at 6.

* WRESTLING

Lakeland sweeps

Lewiston, Timberlake

RATHDRUM - There was a whole lot of bumpin' going on in the Lakeland-Lewiston dual, with both sides bumping a few of their wrestlers up a weight in an attempt to get a favorable matchup.

It worked for Lakeland with Larry Johnson at 120, backfired at 126, and helped at 195 and 220 where Chris Washburn and Killian Estes got pins. All told, Lakeland got a decision and three pins in the final four matches to power past Lewiston.

The key match, Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said, was at 145, where Lewiston bumped up Joshua Reynolds, but Austin Garitone of Lakeland responded with a 5-2 victory.

"That kept the momentum in our favor," Edelblute said. "Our kids wrestled tough overall."

Next up are the 5A and 4A Region 1 tournaments, and the 3A District 1 tournament, Feb. 21 at Lakeland.
