'Jazz is Dead' exhibit opens Monday

COEUR d'ALENE - Spokane artist Bradd Skubinna will display his artwork in the "Jazz is Dead" exhibit in the Boswell Hall Corner Gallery at North Idaho College from Monday through March 27.

Skubinna will host a gallery walk of his work at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday followed by a panel conversation at 1 p.m. in the Meyer Health and Sciences Building Room 102 and the opening reception from 5-7 p.m. in the Boswell Hall Corner Gallery.

"My work may consist of drawings, collages, assemblages, objects and installations. There may be objects arranged on the gallery floor. Once I made some art using carbon paper," Skubinna said in his artist statement.

"Sometimes music is an underlying idea. Sometimes I reference artists whose work I admire. Sometimes I reference personal remembrances, obliquely. I enjoy a good title, though I do not claim to be adept at choosing them. I have a problematic relationship to content, otherwise known as meaning. Arranging things can be fun. And satisfying. Sometimes things are too controlled. That can be bothersome."

Skubinna grew up in Spokane and received a bachelor's degree in studio art and art history from Eastern Washington University. He has lived in Seattle and New York City, where he had several shows and earned a master's degree at the School of Visual Arts. In 2002 he returned to Spokane, where he currently teaches art at Spokane Falls Community College and Whitworth University. His art has been exhibited in Spokane, Seattle, New York City, Portland, Ore., and British Columbia.

"Jazz is Dead" is a free exhibit and open to the public. Corner Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fridays.
