Stein's markets changing hands

by Nils Rosdahl
| February 8, 2015 8:00 PM

Stein's markets began 86 years ago in the Silver Valley. Ed Stein started it all in Kellogg in 1929. His sons Gus, Al, Chuck and Hip (Hubert) took over in 1950. The third generation of Larry, Jim, Mark and Delisa Stein took over in the 1990s.

The second store was in Osburn in 1960 followed by Rathdrum in 1977, Troy, Mont., in 1981 and Eureka, Mont., in 2006. With 150 employees, the five locations are conventional grocery stores with meat, produce, deli-bakery and general merchandise.

After these 86 years, the Steins bow out this week. New owners are Dale and Teresa Watson and sons, Corey and Brett, who also have the Watson Grocery Group stores in Orofino and Chattaroy, Wash. Dale and Teresa grew up in Coeur d'Alene and Rathdrum.

Hours open are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Silver Valley and 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. in Rathdrum.

Now for the Tidbits

- Watch for news on The Paint Buzz and Sola Salon Studios in Riverstone, professional counselor Glenn Vaughn on Merritt Creek Loop, 765 Tech on Government Way, MOD Pizza at Winco Crossroads, the North 40 expansion and Timber Gastropub on Seltice Way.

- Schlotsky's Deli has closed in Ironwood Square. Shenanigan's Toy Emporium is closed for remodeling downtown.

- I've become very aware of handicap parking since two guys I'm close to are now in powered wheelchairs. Their vans need handicap spaces that allow side entries. Too many people, who don't need to, use handicap spaces.

- For the last five years the most common popular car color is white followed by black, silver-grey and red. In fading light, black vehicles have a 47 percent higher crash rate than white and 27 percent higher than silver-grey. Cars of color fare the best. Of course, it helps to have your lights on.

- The bandage was wound around the wound.

- A real headline: "Miners refuse to work after death."

- The only North Idaho TV advertisement during the Super Bowl was Dave Smith Motors. The only other Inland Northwest ad was for Gus Johnson Ford of Spokane.

- A category on TV's "Jeopardy" was "Bodies of Water." The clue was "Heart of the Awl," and the contestant got it correct.
