PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lake City pushes Lewiston until late

| February 1, 2015 8:00 PM

LEWISTON - Clarissa Smith had eight points and nine rebounds for the Lake City Timberwolves in a 43-32 loss to the Lewiston Bengals in the 5A Inland Empire League finale for both on Saturday at Booth Hall.

Lewiston, ranked second in this week's state 5A basketball media poll, led 19-9 at halftime, but Lake City cut the deficit to three points before the Bengals pulled away for the win.

"We shot 3 for 20 in the first half," Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. "We were getting good looks, but couldn't knock them down. We had them on their heels in the fourth quarter, but we had a couple of turnovers and they hit a couple 3-pointers, and then it was an eight-point game."

Keara Simpson had six points and five rebounds and Natalie Wheelock had six assists for Lake City (14-7, 2-4 5A IEL), which travels to Post Falls on Friday in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.

Emilee Schlader scored 18 points for Lewiston (19-1, 6-0), which hosts Coeur d'Alene on Friday at 7 p.m.

We just struggled to hit shots in the fourth quarter and couldn't get the momentum back. Both teams played really hard. It was a good game."
