Keep an eye on aging

The days are getting shorter, we're going to bed earlier and we certainly aren't getting any younger. The air quality has been terrible, with the current fire crisis and environmental factors paired with summer sun exposure creating a perfect storm for aging. This week we are focusing on the aging eye.

The eyes are typically one of the first facial areas that begin to show age, due to their involvement in facial expression. Dark circles, puffiness, and crow's feet are all words that come to mind. There is a veritable arsenal of products that promise to lift, tighten and restore, although we know these promises are often unfulfilled. Let's explore some proven methods for treatment.

The first and most common step to treat the aging eye area is topical home care products. How do you sort through all the product options? It's important to keep in mind that what is sold in retail stores is generally less potent than medical grade products available through a physician. We recommend SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex. This product includes optical diffusers that improve radiance; flavonoids and peptides that diminish dark circles, under eye bags and restore firmness; blueberry extract that inhibits the glycation of collagen and elastin and protects non-glycated collagen from breaking down; and proxylane that increases elasticity and thickness, stimulates collagen synthesis and increases moisture. When applied once to twice daily under the eyes and around the brow area, this product can make a dramatic improvement in wrinkles and crow's feet.

Next, there are injectable options that may help. Cosmetic injectables can be used to fill lines and to temporarily prevent muscle activity that leads to wrinkles. These injectables are often used to treat the common frown line between the brows, as well as the crow's feet. The effects of these products are typically seen within two to three days and can last up to four months.

Last, there are surgical options. Upper and lower blepharoplasty are simple surgical procedures that can be performed in the office under local anesthetic. These procedures remove the excess fat and sagging skin that become characteristic of the aging eye. Upper blepharoplasty can be covered by insurance if the upper eyelid begins to obstruct your vision. The sutures are removed at one week with full recovery reached at six weeks post op.
