KTEC: Student wins - and loses

| August 21, 2015 9:00 PM

Our grandson, Tyler Ranney, just graduated from Post Falls High School. He was enrolled in the carpentry program at KTEC the past two years. He competed in the Idaho State Skills USA Carpentry competition in Nampa in April and won first place, qualifying him to represent Idaho at Nationals in Kentucky in June. He was required to have all the money for his own expenses.

Tyler told his teacher immediately and several times that he had his funds. The rules say no one except the instructor is allowed to attend with the student. His instructor was to take care of all the necessary arrangements so they could attend. The instructor never turned in a “purchase order” for expenses. The parents were told later that if that application had been made to the superintendent of KTEC, the funds would have been available.

On June 8, after Tyler had already graduated, the instructor texted Tyler that there was no funding available. All calls to the superintendent of KTEC and the Post Falls School District resulted in a run around and different stories each time. Other classes at KTEC where students won the right to National competitions all got to go. Future parents of the carpentry program at KTEC need to be aware of this problem.
