POST FALLS - Post Falls Police have no previous reports of violence at the address where a 56-year-old woman was reportedly shot in the face Sunday by her boyfriend.

But some neighbors of the victim and the accused shooter, Shade Miller, 42, are not surprised.

"They have had their disputes over the years and we have stopped a couple of them," neighbor David Giovanelli said. "I am sure he was capable of doing it. Only time will tell what happened."

Giovanelli said he and his wife saw Miller and the victim, whose name has not been released by police, doing yard work together Sunday at the home on West 15th Avenue.

"...and the next thing you know police are surrounding the house," Giovanelli said.

Officers from the Post Falls Police Department responded to the report of the shooting around 4 p.m. after a man called 911 and said he just shot his girlfriend. When officers arrived they found Miller outside the residence, and took him into custody without incident.

Officers entered the residence and found the victim with a gunshot wound to the left side of her face. The woman was transported to Kootenai Health in critical condition, and was then flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where her current condition was unknown by local police officers Monday.

According to her neighbors, the victim has owned and lived in the home for roughly 29 years. The neighbors said Miller has lived there for about 8 years.

Post Falls Police Capt. Greg McLean said he has not been able to locate any previous calls to his department for violence in reference to the suspect and victim.

A few of the victim's friends and neighbors stood outside Monday watching two police detectives seal the home of Miller and the victim.

Alice Pennazoli said she was outside when someone called to let her know the victim had been shot and that police were surrounding the home.

"It was odd that I heard nothing, no shots, nothing at all," Pennazoli said. "I looked over there and there was police and crime scene tape everywhere."

Pennazoli and Giovanelli both say they still feel safe in their neighborhood despite a shooting taking place near their homes. They see this as an isolated incident which, in their opinions, was fueled by alcohol.

Miller was arraigned Monday and as of Monday afternoon, he was being held at Kootenai County jail on $100,000 bail.
