PREP ROUNDUP: Garza lifts T-Wolves past Trojans

BASEBALL

POST FALLS — Cody Garza delivered a two-run double in the sixth inning of the first game and Jordan Ross had a two-run home run in the second game, leading the Lake City Timberwolves past the Post Falls Trojans 11-8 and 7-2 in 5A Inland Empire League play on Wednesday at Post Falls High.

Sam Slusser struck out five in 1 2/3 innings of relief and had two hits for Lake City (8-5, 2-2 5A IEL) in the first game.

Max McCullough hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Treavor Hammel also homered for Post Falls (7-7, 0-4), which battled back to take a 7-6 lead after the fifth inning.

“It was really nice to see our guys fight back after getting behind 5-0 after the first inning and eventually take the lead,” Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. “Jared Porter threw exceptional in relief and it was nice to see our guys compete.”

Wyatt Seaman and Ross had two hits each in the second game for Lake City, which hosts Lewiston on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon.

RJ Clancy and Matt Lebsock had RBIs in the second game for Post Falls, which hosts Coeur d’Alene in a doubleheader Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

“We were pretty flat tonight, but those two came up with some big hits when we needed them,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said.

POST FALLS — Michaela Flerchinger pitched herself out of a jam in the bottom of the first inning on Wednesday, and the Timberwolves’ bats contributed to scoring 30 combined runs in a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader sweep of the Trojans.

“It was definitely a tough day for us, because we had a slow start to our first game,” Jesse Lenz said. “Michaela came out throwing the ball real well. We had runners on first and third in the first inning and we improvised and got out of the inning.”

In the first game, Hannah Nelson went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs for Lake City. Chloe Falciani-Marshall went 1 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs. Kim Cook went 3 for 4 with four RBIs.

Lake City (9-2, 4-0 IEL) proceeded to blank Post Falls (0-9, 0-4) in the second game. Nelson hit a home run, went 2 for 5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Hawkes went 3 for 4 with two runs.

Lake City plays Saturday at home in a doubleheader against Lewiston in IEL play.

Post Falls hosts Coeur d’Alene Friday.

“We need to clean up our errors,” said Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua, whose team committed six errors in the game. “It was nice to get our bats going, but we need to make sure we’re not leaving runners on base. We’re whittling away and getting better each game.”

Starr went 3 for 4, Malloy was 3 for 3 and McGrath had two hits for Timberlake (4-7, 3-0 IML), which hosts Lakeside (Wash.) today.

“I thought we pitched well, played good defense and did a good job hitting the ball,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “That kind of production from your lineup, good things are going to happen.”

Lake City’s girls singles players swept their matches.

“Post Falls is improved and it was a very even (girls) match,” Lake City coach Roger Keilig said. “We’re getting better because we’re out playing more.”

Lake City hosts Sandpoint today starting at 3 p.m.

Post Falls hosts Moscow on Friday.
