PREP BASEBALL: Pote sparks Hawks past Bulldogs

| April 12, 2015 9:00 PM

RATHDRUM - Sophomore Ryan Pote hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning, sparking a four-run output as the Lakeland Hawks beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 9-2 in the first game of a 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Saturday at Gorton Field.

"He's been giving us a spark in that leadoff spot since I moved him up to varsity a couple of weeks ago," Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. "The guys really feed off his energy."

Brian Howell struck out six and Kenny Cooper had two strikeouts in three innings of scoreless relief in the opener.

"They did a great job of throwing strikes," Bradbury said. "They had good command all day."

Lakeland used a six-run sixth inning to beat Sandpoint 8-5 in the second game.

"We got two big wins today and took some steps in the right direction," Bradbury said. "We had a big first inning and that kind of set the tone for the day."

Cooper hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth in the second game to push Lakeland to the win.

"It was nice to see the kids string some good quality at-bats together and come through when they needed to," Bradbury said. "Dalton (Strong) had a very good day on the mound. He had good command and just flat-out competed the whole game."

Paul Sundquist homered and drove in three runs for Sandpoint (2-8), which travels to Moscow on Tuesday.
