TRAPPING: See the ISIS parallel
There is some irony in the parallels between ISIS actions and the Idaho trapping situation. The Middle East is racked with barbaric behaviors from a group under the banner of an out of date, or hijacked religion. It is having a devastating impact upon others who want to enjoy a more modern life. When established in the ‘600s, its principles and values perhaps were consistent with the times. Now the Imams, their religious leaders, need to “Step Up” and lead the transition of that religion from medieval times to modernity. They should preserve the fundamental good parts of their beliefs just as Judaism and Christianity did centuries ago as they were led through their reformations.
The same situation exists for us in Idaho on trapping. Trapping and hunting are important for us to preserve. They played a key role in the early days of our state. They continue today to provide both recreation and in some cases livelihood. However, it is now time for the Legislature and Fish and Game to “Man Up” and lead the transition of our trapping regulations and laws into modernity, consistent with realities of today.
There are some very simple ways to take a lot of the angst out of this mess without much of a realistic imposition upon trappers. Much greater setbacks from well-traveled trails, formally posted notices and making highly used public areas off limits. These would make a huge difference in the public’s view of trappers, increase safety of dogs and children, and still have immense acreages for trappers to pursue their sport or livelihoods.
How about it, Boise? You man enough, or modern enough?
