An old farmhouse setting has become the home of a cafe with an old Irish name. Tilly's on Seventh opened last week at 212 E. Seventh Ave. in Post Falls.

With table seating for 30, Tilly's offers a general menu with daily specials, sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts, kids meals, beer and wine. Owners Joe and Cindy Doellefeld plan a "soft" opening for a couple of weeks with phone, Internet, credit card options, a website and Facebook available soon. They formerly owned Stateline Speedway in Post Falls for 24 years.

Tilly's opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The location is a former optical office at Seventh and William Street behind Les Schwab Tires.

Nu 2 U Thrift opens

Eclectic collectibles, antiques, toys and books - many coming from abandoned residences - are available at Nu 2 U. The thrift store opened last month at 3024 Government Way (just north of Best Tire).

Owner Katherine Reheiser-Buckley and son Justin Wilson have more items coming in and also keep wish lists for items that customers seek. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Phone 916-6502.

Midtown to change

Watch for many changes in Midtown Coeur d'Alene as probable apartments and/or condominiums are built there in the next few years.

One major change will be the 300-block north of Harrison Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets. The building housing Interstate Office Supply, Just Roses and Cd'A Barber and the vacant property to the west probably will become a major convenience store with gas pumps. A Spokane company with major convenience stores purchased the property from Interstate owner Gary Ulvan.

Don't hold your breath as the existing businesses there have long leases. The building began as Modern Drug. The Ace Hardware building is not included.

Now for the Tidbits

- Watch for news on several beverage places including The Cork & Tap in Riverstone, Summit Cider on Schreiber Way and Daft Badger Brewery on Second Street.

- Other upcoming openings are Massage Envy in Ironwood Square, Chamira and Climbworks in the Resort Plaza Shoppes, McAllister Technical Services at 12th and Sherman, Cd'A Nail and Salon at Crossroads and Animal Medical Center on Fourth.

- The Vault coffee shop has opened at Fourth and Sherman. Hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will extend as beer and wine arrive.

- Cd'A Souvenir and Sundry is closing today at 412 E. Sherman and will reopen Oct. 10 at 207 1/2 E. Sherman. Details later.

- Several readers ask what will happen to the property that housed the Beachouse Restaurant on East Lakeshore. The owner, Hagadone Corp., says no plans are made. Same with the former Splash Tavern space in the Plaza Shoppes.

- A real headline: "Missippi's literacy program improves."

- "I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." - Mark Twain.

- It's frustrating that most people riding bicycles and motorcycles wear black so we can't see them.
