Quite the option with Thompson

| September 24, 2014 9:00 PM

In high school football, you've always got to be prepared.

One year, you could be the guy running routes, and the next, the guy responsible for all those calls on offense.

For Post Falls' senior quarterback Dalton Thompson, he's embraced the challenge and rolled with it.

THOMPSON HAS gained 857 yards of total offense this season - 622 passing and 235 rushing - in just four games.

All this after moving from wide receiver to quarterback this year.

"I like it," said Thompson, who is 6-foot-4, 185 pounds. "There's a lot more responsibility on me, and a lot more blame. It's a tough position to play, but I like to lead my team."

So far, the Trojans are 2-2 this season after beating East Valley 33-7 last Friday night in Post Falls.

In his last two games, Thompson has ran for 160 yards out of the team's spread offense.

"Mainly, I'm just looking at the (defensive) end," said Thompson, who played some at quarterback last year when the starter was injured. "If he's coming for my running back, I'll just keep it. But mainly, I'm looking for the running back and let him get those yards."

"It's just some basic zone read," Post Falls coach Jeff Hinz said. "He's in here on Saturdays and a little bit on Sundays now. Everyone's running it now, and Dalton's a talented quarterback that is making the right reads and making some strong runs."

THOMPSON IS quick to credit the offensive line for the team's success thus far, with the team running for 237 yards in Friday's win.

"Our offensive line is the strongest portion of our team," Thompson said. "When they can open holes that big, our backs are good enough to find those holes and get those yards. Tonight, we were able to get some big yards."

Friday's game also served as homecoming for the Trojans.

"Mainly, homecoming is about the football game," Thompson said. "You've got to come out and represent your school and community."

After each Post Falls scoring play, as well as when the team ran onto the field before pregame introductions, fans were treated to fireworks - as well as following the game.

"It's cool to get a big win, not only for our school, but the community and town that comes out and supports us," he said.

And about all those fireworks going off?

"Getting them after the game was a good feeling," Thompson said. "I was glad we got to give that to everyone."

With five games remaining, the Trojans have another rivalry game on tap this week, traveling to Lakeland.

"We just need to keep getting better," Thompson said. "We've got a tough opponent next week in Lakeland that beat up East Valley as well. We need to play four quarters of football."

"It's the Battle of the Prairie," Hinz said. "It's going to be a tough one next week. It's going to be a great matchup and great football game for us."

Considering the last two games have been separated by 10 points - Post Falls won 28-21 in 2013 and Lakeland won 17-14 in 2012 - it could be a great game for everyone that watches it.
