| September 17, 2014 9:00 PM

* BOYS

SANDPOINT - A pair of first half goals propelled the Sandpoint Bulldogs to a 2-1 win over the Lakeland Hawks in 4A Inland Empire League boys soccer Tuesday night under the lights at War Memorial Field.

It was the teams' first meeting since Lakeland won the 4A Region 1 title last year on Sandpoint's home field.

C.J. Crane took a through ball from Jack Rinck, then beat his defender before popping the ball over the goalie's head to give the Bulldogs (3-4, 1-0 4A IEL) an early 1-0 lead. In the 31st minute Dawson Mulder headed in a rebound for a 2-0 lead.

"It absolutely feels good to beat Lakeland after last year's district championship. The importance of league games is huge," Sandpoint coach Adam Tajan said. "I thought we scored two excellent goals. C.J. hit a nice chipper with great composure, and Dawson's header showed some bravery."

Lakeland (1-5, 0-1 4A IEL) scored its goal in extra time, when Brett Rotz found the back of the net after the ball got free in front of the goal.

"Playing them is always an intense match," Lakeland coach Andrew Craig said. "It was well-played by both sides, we had a lot of opportunities with the ball. As the season goes on, we've got to find ways to score. Defensively, we're doing really well. We've just got to do a better job of defending set plays."

POST FALLS — Two would-be Trojan goals were called off by officials in a 5A Inland Empire League loss to the Bengals.

Erica Simpson scored on a penalty kick in the 67th minute, after a hand ball by Lewiston (6-2, 2-1 5A IEL) was called in the penalty box.

“That’s why we play each game,” Sarah Stevens said. “What happened there today was we had a couple of goals called back.”

One potential goal in the 37th minute by Post Falls (2-3-1, 0-1) by Alli Crain was called off, due to a foul by the Trojans before the shot.

“Lewiston comes in and does what they need to do,” Stevens said. “They stay on their game plan. They’re never a team to underestimate.”

Simpson put a ball in the back of the net after her goal, but it was called off due to offside.
