DAR celebrates, explains Constitution Week

| September 17, 2014 9:00 PM

The local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution is working to promote awareness of Constitution Week, which begins today.

"The weeklong commemoration of America's most important document is one of our country's least known official observances," states a media announcement sent out by the Lt. George Farragut Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

"Our Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties and freedom, and to ensure those inalienable rights to every American."

Lt. George Farragut Chapter of DAR members will commemorate the 227th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution at its Sept. 19 meeting. Members will join Americans across the country in ringing bells to celebrate the event.

Elizabeth Jones led a committee which set up Constitution Week displays in several local libraries.

"The U.S. Constitution is the oldest constitution still in active use in the world today, and is the basic document of our republic, which protects the individual liberties of all citizens through written law," states the release. "DAR has served America for 124 years as its foremost cheerleader."

A resolution signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower sets aside Sept. 17-23 each year for the observance of Constitution Week.

"Constitution Week is the perfect opportunity to read and study this great document which is the safeguard of our American liberties," states DAR President General Lynn Forney Young. "We encourage all citizens across the country to take time to reflect on our heritage of freedom and come together to celebrate America."

Membership in Daughters of the American Revolution is open to any woman age 18 or older who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. Lt. George Farragut Chapter meets the third Friday of the month, September through May.
